Curriculum Intent and Maps

Curriculum Intent Key Stage 3

Design and Technology at St Gregory’s is an inspiring, rigorous and practical subject. Pupils use creativity and imagination to design and manufacture products and prototypes that solve real and relevant problems that consider social, moral and cultural values. Drawing on disciplines such as Mathematics, Science, Computing and Art, pupils learn how to become resourceful, innovative, enterprising and capable citizens. High quality Design and Technology education makes an essential contribution to the creativity, culture, health and well-being of the nation.

Classes in Year 7, 8 and 9 are part of a ‘carousel’ system so will move to a different area of the subject three times each year.

Curriculum Intent Key Stage 4

In Year 10 pupils develop their depth of knowledge and understanding by working through a range of mini NEA projects.  Pupils use creativity and imagination to design and manufacture products and prototypes that solve real and relevant problems that consider social, moral and cultural values, forming cross-curricular links, pupils draw on disciplines such as Mathematics, Science, and Computing. Pupils use a range of media in order develop their own design style.

In Year 11 pupils work through their chosen NEA project.  Pupils continue to use creativity and imagination to design and manufacture a working prototype that solves a real and relevant problem that considers social, moral and cultural values. Pupils will continue to develop a deep knowledge and understanding of all aspects of Design Technology in preparation for their end of year examination.

Construction Key Stage 4

In Year 10 pupils are introduced to the various aspects of trades in the Construction industry. Pupils work independently to develop a range of practical skills to manufacture products that solve real and relevant construction projects. Forming cross curricular links, pupils draw on disciplines such as Mathematics, Science and Computing. Pupils develop their knowledge and understanding of safe working practices in the ‘workplace’.

In Year 11 pupils work independently to carry out a range of practical assessment tasks from three trades; Joinery, Painting and Decorating and Tiling. Pupils are required to demonstrate their understanding of safe working practices in the ‘workplace’ throughout these tasks. Pupils then undertake a written assignment involving a set scenario of a new build at a school in Africa.

Engineering Key Stage 4

In Year 10 pupils develop their depth of knowledge and understanding by working through a range of mini NEA projects.  Pupils use creativity and imagination to design and manufacture products and prototypes that solve real and relevant problems that consider social, moral and cultural values, forming cross-curricular links, pupils draw on disciplines such as Mathematics, Science, and Computing. Pupils use a range of media in order develop their own design style that will prepare them for their major GCSE project in Year 11.
